It has also been made fully accessible during the £1million project that has seen a lift installed that allows access to basement meeting rooms, first floor library collection, popular study areas and rentable booths for private meetings.
Word from the Cabinet
Cllr Donatus Anyanwu, Lambeth Council’s Member for Stronger Communities, said: “Brixton Library is an incredible community resource with a wonderful collection of books, films, magazines and more.
“Beyond that the library serves as a community hub with parent and carer groups, employment support, exhibitions, talks and so much more that brings people together.
“For all these reasons I’m delighted this work is now complete and having visited this week I can see what a great job has been done to make Brixton Library even better than it already was.”
During part of the work, which has taken nine-months, a temporary library was set up at nearby Brixton Rec leisure centre in Brixton Station Road to make sure community needs were met during the upgrade.
New lift
The basement has now been opened up for public use and now features new events spaces and rooms for hire that can be accessed via the new lift. A dedicated children’s toilet and baby change area has also been created on the ground floor.
Cllr Anyanwu said: “Lambeth Council invests £4million a year running the borough’s ten libraries and mobile book service. It’s a really vital investment in our community as our library services provide incredible support in so many ways to local people.”
