Aligned with the new administration’s radical vision for delivering better homes, protecting the environment and delivering infrastructure for the borough, the new local plan will set out a clear vision for how Lambeth will grow and develop sustainably over the next 15 years.
Work on developing the Local Plan with all Lambeth’s communities will start in September to ensure it best serves the borough and residents.

“Reviewing our Local Plan is one of the very first things we’re doing to deliver the homes, infrastructure and neighbourhoods our communities’ deserve. We will prioritise delivering the council housing that our residents desperately need, as well as building thriving town centres and local neighbourhoods, and enhancing our public spaces – all while reducing carbon emissions from construction.”

The current plan was adopted in September 2021. By law, local plans must be reviewed and updated every five years. The new plan-making system provides a new opportunity to reshape the development of the borough to enable social and economic growth in Lambeth that best serves current and future needs. The new plan will guide where new homes, including much-needed council homes, are built, support new jobs and local businesses, protect and enhance the borough’s character, environment, open spaces and help Lambeth cut carbon and adapt to climate change.
The council will run an initial six-week consultation in September to gather views on what the new plan should focus on and how people want to be involved. We are committed to having an open and transparent community consultation process and will seek to meet residents where they are, ensuring their voices are heard and their ideas help shape their future borough.
The engagement will be both online and off-line, with the council also working to hear directly from young people as part of Lambeth’s commitment as a UNICEF UK Child Friendly Community.
Further community conversations will follow over the next 24-months with the aim of adopting the new Local Plan in Spring 2029.
Key moments in the development of the Local Plan include:
- July 2026 – Council formally gives notice that work on the new Local Plan has begun, and publishes the timetable
- September–October 2026 – Residents and stakeholders have their first say (scoping consultation)
- July–August 2027 – Consultation on the plan’s content and supporting evidence
- July–August 2028 – Consultation on the proposed Local Plan
- April 2029 – New Local Plan adopted
