Lambeth’s Literary Festival Is Back and Bigger Than Ever

Running across May and into June, the 2026 festival offers an exceptional programme designed to suit all tastes. Whether you enjoy reading, writing, lively discussions, or simply sitting back and listening, residents and visitors are invited to discover just how engaging and accessible literature can be in their local spaces.

This year’s highlights showcase a dynamic mix of fiction, non-fiction and creative events. Fiction audiences can hear from Remi Kone discussing her Leah Hutch crime series, while Marcia Hutchinson and Lisa Smith explore their Women’s Prize longlisted novel Mercy Step. A dedicated local writers’ panel featuring Celia Silvani, Marni Appleton and Rupert Dastur will shine a spotlight on the borough’s vibrant literary talent, reflecting the Year of Reading’s focus on nurturing local voices.

For those interested in non-fiction and ideas, the programme offers a series of thought-provoking discussions. Stephen Cushion will examine the legacy of slavery in the British Empire and its modern-day impact, while Sue Hubbard explores the work of Welsh painter Gwen John. Lambros Fatsis joins a panel of legal experts to discuss Black music, racism and criminal injustice, and Dee Majek closes the month with a powerful poetry session on writing about home, highlighting how reading and writing can deepen understanding of identity and place.

The festival also expands beyond traditional author talks, reinforcing the National Year of Reading’s inclusive and creative approach. Visitors can discuss screenwriting  with Nathaniel Price, attend a screening of Author: The JT Leroy Story, browse the local Author Book Fair, and join a discussion on the bestselling novel The Safekeep with the Lambeth LGBTQ+ reading group. As part of wider cultural celebrations, the festival also connects with the Urban Tree Festival through poetry readings for the library “Poet-tree”.

With events continuing into June, the festival plays a central role in sustaining momentum throughout the National Year of Reading, encouraging more people to read for pleasure, discover new voices and engage with their local libraries in meaningful ways.
